A guide to using essential oils in the sauna

A simple trick to enhance your sauna experience is to add some essential oils to the water which is used to heat up the rocks. Whether you are looking to get restored or energised, we have you covered with our choice of ‘essential’ essential oils!

The citrusy smells are perfect for the morning sauna, it should wake you up more than a glass of orange juice! However, they should be avoided in the evening sessions as they are not the ones to create a calming effect.

  • Orange - great for uplifting your spirits, reducing anxiety and stress and relieving stomach upset.

  • Lemongrass - antibacterial and anti-fungal, helps relieve headache and migraine, good for stomach upset.

A way to get that little boost for your immune system this autumn using essential oils is best done with:

  • Tea Tree - known as the best essential oil for fighting infections and boosting the immune system, highly effective in fighting respiratory issues and sickness, like flu.

The next three are probably some of the most popular oils in the whole of aromatherapy:

  • Lavender - perfect for an evening wind down, helps to calm headaches and promotes a good night’s sleep

  • Eucalyptus - eases mental exhaustion, helps to kill germs and bacteria in the air! Relieves congestion and clears sinuses.

  • Peppermint - has a cooling effect, boosts energy, great for waking up the senses in the morning, contains antispasmodic properties which makes it a great remedy for nausea
