The Benefits of a Sauna: Why Saunas Are So Good For Your Health

Sauna has been used for thousands of years around the globe for pleasure, wellness, relaxation and even spiritual purposes. Finnish-style saunas are the most studied to date and emerging evidence shows that regular sauna bathing has a myriad of health benefits. Here are a few that we think you would like to know more about:

  • Sauna helps widen blood vessels, reduce blood pressure and increase circulation, making your heart happy and healthy!

  • Regular sauna helps treat and prevent skin disease, such as eczema and psoriasis. The heat of the sauna leads to this increased circulation and causes the nutrients to move towards the subcutaneous and surface tissue level, resulting in healthy glowing skin. Regular sauna also helps to cleanse the skin removing all the oil and impurities that clog the pores and cause acne. However, it is very important to shower after every sauna session to wash away all the impurities and toxins from the skin.

  • Strengthens the immune system , slows down ageing due to cell regeneration and excrete toxins from the body, such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.

  • Improves muscles stiffness and fatigue. Your blood vessels relax and dilate in the sauna and with the high temperature, the blood flow increases which in turn helps to reduce tension in the joints and relieve sore muscles.

  • Sauna bathing reduces the levels of cortisol in our blood, and instead, stimulates the production of serotonin, also known as the “happy hormone” that makes us feel good. By simply allowing yourself time to relax and enjoy peace if you are by yourself or social time with your friends without the distraction of phones and such!

To get the most out of your sauna session, expose the body to the heat for 5-10 min, then cool down and start again. Also remember to drink plenty of water, at least 2-4 glasses, beforehand and after each session to allow the body to thoroughly hydrate and refresh.
